Coffee Table Size Guide & Tips

Size Guide — How to Choose Your Coffee Table

This guide helps you choose the right width (W), depth (D), and height (H) based on your sofa size, seating capacity, and room layout. All sizes listed are overall table dimensions.

3 Quick Rules (Most Helpful)

  • Sofa-to-table gap: keep 14–18″ for comfortable reach without crowding.
  • Walkway clearance: aim for 24–30″ of space around the table for easy flow.
  • Standard height: 16″H works best for most sofa seat heights.

1) Choose WIDTH (W) Based on Sofa Size & Seating

A good proportion is:
Coffee table width = about 1/2 to 2/3 of your sofa length (or the main seating side).

Quick Match.

  • 2-seat loveseat (about 55–70″ long)
    W 24–32″
Best for small living rooms, apartments, compact seating.

  • 3-seat sofa (about 72–90″ long)
    W 32–38″
The most balanced range for everyday use.

  • Sectional / L-shape (4–6 seats)
    W 34–42″
Better visual weight and surface area for larger seating layouts.

Tip: If you’re between two sizes, choose larger for open layouts and big sofas, and smaller if your room is tight or you need more walking space.

2) Choose DEPTH (D) Based on Layout & Room Flow

Depth controls how “open” the room feels and how easy it is to walk around the table.

  • Small rooms / tight walkways:D 20–23″
  • Most standard living rooms:D 23–28″
  • Large sofas / open layouts:D around 28″ for a grounded, roomy surface

Quick check: If your walkway ends up under 24″, reduce D (or choose a smaller width).

3) Height Reference (H)

  • Standard: 16″H (best for most sofas)
  • If your sofa sits low (deep lounge style): 15–16″ can feel better
  • If your sofa is higher or you prefer a more elevated surface: 16–18″ (custom)

Best practice: The tabletop should sit at or slightly below your sofa seat height.

4) How Many People Can Comfortably Use the Table?

This is based on “reach” from seating (not dining-style seating around the table):

  • W 24–28″: comfortable for 1–2 people
  • W 32–34″: comfortable for 2–4 people
  • W 38–42″: comfortable for 4–6 people (more drinks/snacks/activities)

5) Room Scale Quick Pick

  • Apartment / small living room: W 24–32″, D 20–23″
  • Medium living room (most common): W 32–38″, D 23–28″
  • Large / open layout: W 38–42″, D ~28″

6) Match to Our Standard Sizes (Easy Checkout)

Use the guidance above, then select the closest size below:

  • 24″W × 20″D × 16″H — small rooms, accent seating, apartments
  • 28″W × 23″D × 16″H — loveseats, compact sectionals
  • 32″W × 27″D × 16″H — standard sofas in smaller rooms
  • 34″W × 28″D × 16″H — balanced daily-use proportions
  • 38″W × 28″D × 16″H — large sofas, sectionals
  • 42″W × 28″D × 16″H — open layouts, statement scale
